Why your Moisturiser can’t double as an Eye Cream

The skin around the eye area is very delicate and when dehydrated or fatigued, as we know, can appear crepey very easily.
This is due to the thinner dermal matrix in the orbital area and naturally less sebaceous glands (oil producing glands) and smaller pore size. Because of the lack of oil in this area, our acid mantle or ‘skin barrier’ is more susceptible to external environmental aggressors.

In your normal serums and moisturisers, the active ingredients are of a higher percentage, as the facial skin can generally tolerate this. Applying high-strength actives too often in the eye area may lead to irritation of the delicate skin, and an impaired barrier. If our skin barrier becomes impaired, especially in the eye area, the skin is unable to maintain it’s own natural moisturising factors and because of this the skin will appear even more ‘dehydrated’.

Eye creams are also formulated with small molecules opposed to larger molecules found in your moisturisers and night creams. The smaller the molecular weight, the easier it will penetrate and absorb into the fragile, fine skin. If you are consistently using a facial moisturiser over the eye area, not only are you making your eye area more prone to milia, but you are wasting your product- these large molecules aren’t absorbing into the dermis and are sitting on the surface of your skin where they can’t make an impact to the appearance of your fine lines.

When choosing your eye cream, ensure that if it contains active ingredients, that it is also formulated with hydrating, barrier supporting ingredients. Look for Antioxidants, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Peptides, Caffeine and of corse Hyaluronic Acid.

If you are yet to try an eye cream, we suggest the iS Clinical Youth Eye Complex which contains Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin B5, Copper Peptides, Soy Proteins and Growth Factors.

And If you do prefer some active ingredients, we love the iS Clinical C Eye Serum Advance, which has 7.5% L-Ascorbic Acid, paired with 40% Hyaluronic Acid and Zinc to support the hydration of the skin.

Replace your facial moisturiser with an eye cream and thank us later
